Media accounts from Mali are contradictory, but clearly indicate fighting and an attempted coup by the military. Military forces indicate they have control of the country; but releases from the Presidential palace claim that the President remains in place and in control. What is certain is that an attempt to perpetrate a coup is underway. There is fighting in Bamako.
CCI has receive reports from several mission agencies that there is sporadic fighting in the streets, including in the capitol, but that the fighting is generally restricted to military and security units. As yet, we have not seen reports of widespread rioting, looting, etc.
CCI recommends that agencies and personnel in Mali follow organizational contingency plans; generally shelter in place in secure locations, and maintain communications with their offices, dispersed personnel, and colleagues in like-minded organizations.
