On January 19, 2012 the U.S. Department of State issued the following Travel Warning for Algeria:
“On January 19, 2013, the Department of State authorized the departure from Algiers for eligible family members following the attack on the In Amenas BP Oil facility on January 16, 2013 and subsequent, credible threats of the kidnapping of western nationals. While the Consular Section is open for public services, the Embassy’s ability to respond to emergencies involving U.S. citizens throughout Algeria is limited.” (read entire warning here .)
CCI also notes the the United Kingdom issued an update to its Travel Advice page for Algeria on January 18, 2013:
“Terrorists have been involved in kidnaps in Algeria and the wider Sahel region. We believe further kidnap attacks are likely. See our Sahel page for further information and advice about the regional threat from terrorism.” (read entire warning advice here .)
CCI Commentary: We believe that these new postings by the U.S. and the U.K., both citing kidnapping threats, are worthy of very deliberate attention by all western faith-based organizations with personnel in Algeria. The specific statement by the U.S. that it has “credible threat”(s) after the BP event is significant.
